Despite not being able to test the new parts that arrived for the bike before we made the trip up to Zwartkops for the third round of the 2020 SA SuperBike championship, I was able to make the best of what we had and take two third places to keep my championship hopes very much alive.
We spent most of Friday working on finding the right setup, getting better with each session. My time in the final qualifying practice was good enough for second on the grid just behind Garrick Vlok.
Race 1 saw Clint Seller get a flyer off the line and he and Vlok battled for the lead. I slotted into third and, with no pressure from behind, settled for the podium finish and banked the points. We worked on the setup between races and I got a great start in the second heat, taking the lead into the first corner. Unfortunately, I couldn’t keep Seller and Vlok behind me and had to settle for another third place.
Overall it was still a successful weekend scoring points and using the time in the saddle to collect data. We know of a few small improvements on the bike we need to do before the next round. The changes for race 2 were 100% a step in the right direction.
Assuming the Covid-19 situation does not change things, we should be back in action at the end of September at Red Star Raceway.
