SuperGP round 2 Cape Town

Round two of the SA National super bike championship was upon us and I had high hopes that we could make the most of the home track advantage. Friday was a crazy day for me with my focus on my business, The RPM Centre, as well as my personal race day. The RPM CENTER team had three 600cc riders, one 300cc rider and one supermaster rider campaigning this round. It was never easy making sure everyone is on track, but I got it done. RPM Centre team has decided that 2018 will be focusing on the future stars. All three 600cc riders are under the age of 17 and we have one young lady in the 300cc class competing with great success.

Qualifying saw me end up P3 in heat one and P2 in heat two. This was largely due to having made some big changes in qualifying by trying something new with the electronics. On Saturday morning warm up we made a few more changes that moved us in the right direction. We were fastest in the morning warm up.

Race 1
I was confident that we could get to the front but unfortunately that wasn’t the case. For the first 5 laps of the race I was struggling to get up to the pace needed and ended up having to work too hard to close the gap to first. I had to settle for 2nd place.

Race 2
Race 2 was much of the same as race 1. I got a bad start and had to play catch up. Once I had fought to 2nd place the gap to the leader had already developed. I worked as hard as possible to slowly close the gap. On lap 10 there was a red flag which resulted in a restart. At the restart I got another poor start but this time I was not letting the race get away from me. Knowing it was only a 5 lap sprint race I gave it my all. By lap 2 I found myself in 4th and going down the back straight I went for the outside line. I passed the 3 riders and hit the lead were I managed to put my head down for the last 3 laps and push for the win. Overall it ended as a great weekend with me now leading the SA National championship. My plan was just to use the SA Races for a bit of bike fitness so to be leading championship I am well happy. Huge thanks again to all my sponsors.

RPM Centre team took 1 pole, 1 win and 4 podiums it was a great success for the team.

Next I am off to Spain for round 1 of the Spanish superbike championship. Keep following me for updates.
