Redstar – the final frontier
As 2017 South African National championship comes to a close we find ourselves rolling up to the Red Star Raceway national. It was the final round of the season and we had a positive feeling. Could it be the best race of the season? After getting back on to the podium at the Phakisa national we, at RPM Center, have been working day and night to improve the BMW.
From the first session on Friday we had a good feeling. We had a good base set up with the electronics and the suspension. We owe big thanks to Devis from Bitubo for always going the extra mile to help us.
After the four official practice sessions, we went into qualifying ready to cash in all the chips and put in a banger lap. We managed to put in 1 lap at 1.51.7 which is the fastest lap a BMW has done around Red Star. This put us 6th for race 1 and 7th for race 2.
Saturday morning’s warm up saw us making some small adjustments to the chassis to improve the bike. This gave us more confidence to push in the race.
We managed to get a good start and hold 6th place for the first two laps. I had to then pit due to an electrical issue. Fortunately we managed to fix it and get back out on track and completed another 8laps to make sure all was ok. We used these laps riding alone to see how the bike would have worked over the race distance.
This was a turn up for the books. We got a great start from 7th making up a place or two after mid race and sitting in the top 5. We then pushed and got into the lead. I couldn’t fault the BMW. It was perfect. The set up we had was spot on to win and we were so happy to finally be in the front again. We led for a few laps holding until the end of lap 12 out of 14. After a small mistake we ended up in P3. We are happy to end the last race of the season on the podium and have shown that we have the pace to win again.
Huge thank you to all the sponsors in 2017 making the dream come true BMW mottard, Sandton Auto BMW, Stunt SA, RPM Center, MSD racing, Primi Piatti, Nix Graphics, RST
Next up is the last WPMC Regional race of the championship. We are leading the championship by 2 points after missing 2 rounds due to national races. The goal is to win the championship and end the season with a new lap record. This will set us up in a good place to prepare for 2018.
