Overall it was a really positive race weekend at Valencia. This is the first time I could say that I felt at home with the Yamaha R1. It finally felt like it’s my own bike.
On Thursday and Friday’s practices we focused on getting as many laps in as possible and tried different tire options. We wanted make sure we had our tyre strategy in place for the race.
Saturday was complicated. On our first lap out the pits, it rained and we all pitted to change to wets. Being the first time I have rode the R1 in the wet and first time on Dunlop wets I just chipped away at it steadily lap by lap, finding my way carefully. I ended up P9 on Saturday. I was happy. The team had given me a great base set up for my first time on this bike and tire combo.
This was another complicated session. I exited the box with wets to find that 70% of the track had a dry line. I entered again for a fresh set of Slicks and managed to get a few laps in whilst finding how to push on in the tricky conditions. I managed to Qualify a strong 4th. I was really happy with the hard work from the team and Dunlop. They gave me the right options to get the job done.
On Race day it was a waiting game. We were not sure what the weather was going to do. Luckily the rain stayed away, eliminating any curveballs from my 4th place start for the 18Lap race. I pushed on from the start and tried to stay with the lead groups. After a few laps the first 3 had broken away and left us as a group of 5 battling for the positions. I ended 9th in my class I’m very happy that we are making big progress forward with the Yamaha R1. Thank you to Team Stratos.
Next Race Jerez 18-21st October will be a double header. Really looking forward to ending the season on a high
