Jerez – the last round
The 2018 race season has officially come to an end for me. The final round of the CEV Spanish superbike championship was held at Jerez this past weekend. From start to finish it was an extremely hard and demanding weekend for me and Team Stratos Yamaha. The Thursday saw all 3 sessions happening in wet conditions. The Friday all 3 sessions happened in mainly dry conditions and then on Saturday qualifying 1 was wet with a few dry places and qualifying 2 was much of the same. We were struggling all weekend to get feeling on the front end / front tyre and to this end I only managed to qualify 21st.
This was a complete disaster for us as the track was too wet for dry tyres yet too dry for wets and not having an option of an intermediate tyre, we had to use the wet tyre. This option totally destroyed itself after a few laps and I ended up finishing 25th.
On Saturday it was a sunny day with a dry track and I was much more confident that we would be able to get a much better result. After getting a good start, the first 5 laps turned into a crazy battle. With quite a few riders changing places I managed to work my way up to 14th. I finally ended up finishing 15th overall and 12th in my class. I’m happy to have made up some places in the race.
Big thanks to Team Stratos Yamaha and Dunlop for giving me the opportunity to finish the season. It has been a great experience learning the Yamaha R1 and the Dunlop tyres. I’m excited to see what 2019 holds. Huge thanks to all my personal sponsors for all the help in 2018 making my dreams possible, Rpm Center, Stunt SA, RST, Motodirect and my family for support.
